Let There Be Light!

I’ve always admired people who beautifully decorate their house with lights at Christmas time… and this admiration started at a young age. Every year around Christmas my dad would take my sisters and I to the “ritzy” part of town and we’d drive around looking at the Christmas lights on people’s houses. Some of these houses were incredibly decorated! Like breathtakingly beautiful! I vowed that one day I would have one of these houses!

Every year since I have owned my own home (which is, uhhh, close to 10 years now), I have vowed to decorate with outdoor lights. Every year. And every year I find an excuse not to… it will take too much time. It will be expensive. I can’t find the lights I want. It’s toooo cold! And without fail, every year, my house has gone without outdoor lights.

This year I promised myself it would be different. I would make outdoor Christmas lights a top priority! So last Saturday afternoon, during our weekly trip to Home Depot Canada, “J” and I somehow found ourselves in the Christmas lights section… staring at the wall of lighting options. So many affordable options at so many different price points! How could we possibly choose?

From battery operated lights and trendy lanterns, to traditional string lights and complete light shows that can be controlled by your smartphone, the possibilities for lighting this holiday season are endless! But it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options…

Knowing your personal holiday style before heading out to buy any type of decorations is always a helpful first step. Are you colourful and cheery? Then perhaps multicolour lights are for you! Are you timeless and classic? Then long-lasting LED’s are likely right up your alley!

Over the past 5 years “J” and I have curated a holiday décor collection that is mostly made up of what I would call Traditional Holiday Items; red and gold bulbs, burlap ribbons, rustic wood decorations and warm light. We also know we like to keep things simple and classic. This lead us select LED string lights with warm undertones… and to add in a touch of fun and whimsy we picked up an Applight Kaleidoscope Spotlight! What I love about this applight is that it can not only be controlled by your smartphone, it comes with 49 lighting effects and several colour combinations; I could use it for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, birthday parties… making this holiday light purchase applicable for any celebration!

When “J” and I arrived at home we quickly got to work. Now I must admit we did look a bit crazy decorating our house for Christmas in November… and we did get a few passerby’s that gave us weird looks, but the fact of the matter was.. it was nice out! The one thing that always holds me back from using outdoor décor (specifically lights) is the cold December air. I’ve now determined decorating in double-digits in November is the way to go… no matter how many funny looks you get!

For the first time in 10 years the outside of my house is fully decorated… and I love it! The lights add such a festive flair and cast such a charming and welcoming spell on my house. The warm glow of the LED’s is jazzed up with the twinkling radiance from the app lights, and the front porch is inviting and totally fitting of my home décor style! My 10-year- old self would be proud!

  1. We need to get lights this year… badly! I feel like plugging in one of those light shows and calling it a day would be the easiest option!

        Absolutely beautiful!

    1. Of course! The tray is from Urban Barn, the gold votive is from Ikea and the skates are from Home Depot Canada. They were all part of last year’s inventory, so I am not sure if you’ll be able to find them in stores today!
